Think About the Epic
Beowulf was originally an oral tale. What kinds of stories can be shared today by means other than books? How does telling a story out loud keep it alive?
There were many kinds of stories that are passed down orally. For example, Coyote Finishes His Work can be considered one literature that's shared in the form other than books although it's now written for people to read. Also, other kind of stories like fairy tales, legends or even gossips and jokes are all considered stories that are not written but told and transfered to people through media like movies and TV shows.
Even though passing down a story orally may change some of its original content and ideas, the way does help to keep it alive. Back in the days without printing machines and accessible paper, books were unfordable and almost impossible for people who were not king or nobles. Additionally, most of the people back then were illiterate so even if they had books, they would not be able to understand the content. Therefore, telling stories became the best way to keep a story safe and sound over time.
